Encountering the Stranger is a four part series. Wednesday, May 17th, is the first movie of the series from CNN, a Special Report: ISIS behind the Mask. This is an adult only movie at the church hall at 7 pm. Babysitting is available for those with children.

Wednesday, May 24th at 7pm, Of Gods and Men is based on a true story. When nearby radical-Islamist insurgents begin killing foreigners, a group of Christian monks must face a difficult choice. Will they flee and abandon the community that they have served for years, or will they stay, secure in their spiritual calling despite the possibility of abduction or murder?

Loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996, Of Gods and Men tells a story of eight French Christian monks who live in harmony with their Muslim brothers.

When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps through the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse.

Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay.

Wednesday, May 31st at 7pm, Beasts of No Nation is a Netflex original film. When civil war tears his family apart, a young West African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.

Agu describes himself as a “good boy from a good family”, but when his village is massacred and his family murdered, he soon learns that the line between innocence and insurgency is as thin as the blade of his machete.

While the war rages on, he becomes increasingly divorced from the life he had known before the conflict started, a life of school friends, church services, and time with his family. As he vividly recalls these sunnier times, his daily reality continues to spin further downward into inexplicable brutality, primal fear, and loss of selfhood.

Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala, the film takes an unapologetic look at the unimaginable costs of civil war.

Wednesday, June 7th at 7pm, Sin Nombre. Would you risk it all for the hope of a better tomorrow?

Sayra, a young Honduran woman, joins her father and uncle on an odyssey to cross the gauntlet of the Latin American countryside.

Along the way, she crosses paths with a teenaged Mexican gang member, El Casper, who is maneuvering to outrun his violent past and unforgiving former associates.

Together they have to rely on faith, trust and street smarts if they are to survive their increasingly perilous journey towards the hope of new lives.
